Director of Development & Finance
Position Overview
The PROVENIQ Foundation has identified over $475,000 in near-term grant opportunities across animal welfare, technology, and rural innovation funding categories. It has a $1,000,000 sponsorship campaign launching in 2026. It has a legislative agenda that opens doors to government funding streams most nonprofits never access. What it needs is the person who turns that pipeline into money in the bank — and makes sure every dollar that comes in is handled with the integrity the mission demands.
The Director of Development & Finance owns two things that are inseparable in a well-run nonprofit: the strategy that brings funding in and the financial operations that ensure it is managed properly. This role reports to the VP & COO and works in close partnership with the President & CEO on financial oversight, compliance, and funding strategy.
Core Responsibilities
Grant Development & Funding Strategy
- Own the full grant lifecycle from prospecting through compliance reporting — research, writing, submission, award management, and funder stewardship
- Manage a rolling 12-month grant calendar and pipeline dashboard with the discipline of someone who does not miss deadlines
- Priority funding targets include HABRI, USDA rural innovation programs, PetSmart Charities, ASPCA grants, and Tech for Good foundations
- Draft compelling grant narratives that translate PROVENIQ's technology ecosystem into outcomes funders can evaluate and believe in
- Identify and develop new funding opportunities aligned with platform launches, legislative milestones, and community impact data
- Work with the VP & COO and President & CEO to align funding strategy with organizational timelines and cash flow needs
Financial Operations
- Manage accounts payable and all organizational disbursements — processing payments, maintaining vendor relationships, and ensuring accurate financial records
- Maintain the Foundation's bookkeeping in coordination with the President & CEO's financial oversight role — reconciliations, categorizations, and documentation
- Prepare financial reports and documentation required for grant compliance, Board reporting, and IRS 990 filings
- Support the President & CEO in annual budget preparation and mid-year financial reviews
- Ensure PROVENIQ maintains the financial controls and documentation standards required by funders, auditors, and 501(c)(3) status
Donor Development & Fundraising
- Build and manage a small but strategic major gifts program — identifying, cultivating, and stewarding individual donors who believe in the mission
- Support the Mountain State 100K Challenge & Giveaway fundraising campaign in partnership with the VP & COO
- Manage donor communications, gift acknowledgments, and stewardship touchpoints
- Collaborate with the Director of Outreach & Government Relations to identify government funding streams and partnership opportunities that complement the grant strategy
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of grant writing experience with a demonstrable track record — come prepared to discuss what you have won and what you have learned
- Strong nonprofit finance fundamentals — accounts payable, bookkeeping, compliance reporting, and financial controls
- Exceptional written communication — grant narratives require the ability to make complex technology feel human and fundable
- Familiarity with nonprofit compliance and reporting requirements, including 990s, restricted funds, and grant documentation
- Organized and systems-minded enough to manage a dense grant calendar without dropping threads
Preferred
- Experience with animal welfare, technology, rural/Appalachian community, or public health funding streams
- Existing relationships with the WV Community Foundation, USDA, or regional philanthropic networks
- Background in nonprofit financial management, fiscal sponsorship, or organizational budgeting
- Familiarity with HABRI, PetSmart Charities, ASPCA, or similar animal welfare funders
- Experience at a Family Refuge Center, community action agency, or similar rural mission-driven nonprofit is a strong plus
